Everyone likes to watch YouTube videos, but in many cases we really want to be able to convert them to MP3 files. While this is of dubious legality and violates YouTube's terms of service, a lot of people do it anyway. Sometimes we just want to listen to an audio track without an internet connection, or we want to use the sound as an audio track or as a ringtone. No matter why we want to do it, most of us have downloaded media and converted it for our own use.

Convert YouTube video to MP3 by yourself

The first way is to download YouTube video to your computer and then use VLC to convert it from MP4 to MP3. Most YouTube videos are in MP4 format, so it's very easy. VLC is a great video player, but also comes with a wide range of useful features. Everyone should have VLC on their computer, but if you're one of the few who don't, download and install it from here, VLC works on Windows, OSX, iOS, Android, and Linux, so pretty much no matter what computer you have, VLC is available for you.

Download a YouTube video to your computer using the downloader website. I tend to use Savefrom.net but there are many similar sites out there. Scroll down to "Convert YouTube Video to MP3 with Conversion Website" to see a list of the ones I've tried and tested.

Open VLC on your computer.
Select "Media" and then "Convert / Save".
Select Add and select the file you want to convert to MP3.
At the bottom, click the down arrow next to the Convert/Save button and select Convert.

I try to keep extensions to a minimum as it will inevitably impact browser speed and performance when using more active extensions. If you convert often, they can be useful. There are many browser extensions out there - here are a few that I have checked.

Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express - Firefox

Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express is a decent Firefox extension that works great with YouTube and can easily convert files. The extension is free, but if you want to download HD, you will need to pay a premium. The extension adds a download button to the browser when on YouTube you just have to select to download. Choose a quality or format and go from there.

Video2MP3 - Opera, Firefox and Chrome

Video2MP3 works with multiple browsers including Opera, Firefox and Chrome. You can download media directly from the website using the address bar in the center or as the extension above. The extension adds a converter button below the YouTube video that will load quickly on your device.

I haven't experienced any slowdowns while using this site so there are probably better resources than GreemMp3.

As I mentioned above, the legality of uploading and storing YouTube videos is questionable (or worse) depending on where you live. You should keep this in mind when using this tutorial and do as you see fit. YouTube is also aware of these websites and browser extensions and is actively trying to shut down as many of them as possible.

If you find that some or none of these links work, just do a Google search for alternatives - these types of services are a big Whack-a-mole game. As soon as one falls, another appears somewhere else. Since Google owns YouTube, you can expect Chrome extensions to take on the bulk of this.
